Gamescom 2017 – Overview

Starting on August 22nd, we can finally enjoy the gamescom in Cologne again. It is the biggest Convention for computer and video games in Europe. We put together for you what you can expect from the gamescom so far. We will, of course, put together any further information we can get.

Where and when is the Gamescom?

The gamescom will be again held in Cologne this year.  On Agust 22nd, it will only open for people from the games industry as well as people from the press. Afterwards, the gamescom will be open from August 23rd until August 26th. This means, unlike the years before, that the gamescom won’t be open on Sunday. On Wednesday and Thursday, you can enter the gamescom from 10 am to 8 pm. For Friday and Saturday, it will open one hour earlier. So, you can enjoy it from 9 am to 8 pm.

What is the price of a ticket?

The first point first, there are no day tickets for Friday and Saturday available anymore. You can still buy Afternoon tickets for Saturday and Family day tickets for Friday, but that is it for those two days.

For Wednesday and Thursday, it looks way better for now. Right now, you can buy a day ticket for 14€ and reduced day tickets for 8.50€. To be able to use those reduced day tickets, you have to take with you a valid proof (student card, handicapped ID or something similar). Another option is the Family Day Ticket which costs 25.50€. This ticket is valid for up to 5 persons with them being one or two adults and one to four kids (7 to 11 years old).

Important: Babies and infants aged up to 3 years are not allowed at the convention. Children aged up to 11 years are only able to visit the convention when accompanied by an adult.

You can buy the tickets at the Online ticket store or the convention. But be aware that it will be a bit more expensive at the convention.

Which other events are noteworthy during the gamescom?

Gamescom Festival

Friday (August 28th) and Saturday (August 29th), there will be the gamescom Festival in the Innercity of Cologne. There, you can enjoy a lot of different Street Food but also some nice music.

This year, there will be the following artists: Alice Merton (“No Roots”), Grossstadtgeflüster, Cat Ballou, Team Rythmusgymnastik, Moop Mama, Querbeat and the famous Guildo Horn. Apart from them, you can also enjoy some games over there. They want to put up some Gaming Modules that you can use during the festival which also exceeds the opening time of the actual gamescom.

Are there any noteworthy celebrities?

But, yes, of course, there are. As usual, we can meet up with famous YouTubers like Gronkh, Sarazar, Rewinside and some more. We can meet some famous game developers, which shouldn’t be a surprise.

Gamescom Angela Merkel

But the real surprise is the appearance of Angela Merkel. She will be there to open this year’s gamescom. This shows how important the games community becomes. Normally, we can see her only on other conventions like the Cebit in Hannover or the International Automobile Exhibition in Frankfurt. But then again, it might also be connected to this year’s election.

What else can we enjoy at the gamescom?

Gamescom Cosplay Village

Next to games, there are some other interesting activities on the gamescom.

For every Cosplay and Lover of Cosplays, it should be a must to visit the Cosplay Village in  Hall 10. Apart from that, there is an Indoor Area with Laser Tag Event, Red Bull X-Fighters FMX Demo Show and the COS Cup (Pro skating).

There will also be the gamescom Congress with many interesting lectures. Noteworthy lecturers are Paul Galloway of the Museum of Modern Art, Edward Partridge from World Wide Fund For Nature and Prof. Dr Markus Gabriel from the University of Bonn.

There will also be a nice travel through time in the “retro gaming” section. Gaze at all the great consoles, pcs, handhelds and other gaming machines that were developed over time and led us to today’s gaming experience. You might even be lucky and able to try out some of them.
